Assault at traveller site sparks major incident response

Highwood Park Gypsy and Traveller Park, Highwood Road, Patchway

Police and ambulance units have been in action in Patchway this morning, responding to an incident at the Highwood Park gypsy and traveller site in Highwood Lane.

Four vehicles from the Great Western Ambulance Service (GWAS), including a ‘major incident response vehicle’ were seen parked at the bottom of Highwood Road, near Patchway Roundabout. The police helicopter was seen circling the area and other police and ambulance service vehicles were also deployed.

A spokesperson for GWAS said they had been alerted by two 999 calls just before 11am in relation to an assault said to have taken place at the traveller site. They were informed that the situation “was ongoing and had the potential for further casualties” and so mobilised a major response.

In view of the potentially ongoing situation, most of the units were instructed to “stand off” at a distance from the traveller site.

GWAS say that one male patient suffering from head injuries has been taken to Frenchay Hospital.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police confirmed the details provided by GWAS, adding that police officers were now searching the area for a suspect.

Anyone who witnessed the assault or noticed people acting suspiciously in the area is asked to contact police on 101 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
