Judo club volunteers up for national award

Posted on Wednesday 15th August 2012 at 7:14 pm by SH (Editor)

Alex Bright and Emma Peacock of Patchway Judo Club, Bristol.

Not only do Patchway Judo Club’s players bring home the medals and trophies, their volunteers do too!

Emma Peacock, the club’s treasurer, has made it through to the top four national award for club volunteers and, not to be out done, Alex Bright, 17, has made it through to the top four national award for young volunteer.

To see whether they receive a gold, silver or bronze award, British Judo is conducting an open ballot for supporters to vote for them and the other candidates.

Emma and Alex didn’t know they were being nominated and were shocked and pleased to have not only been nominated but to have got to the finals. As you can see from their judo kits they are both active judo players as well.

These two are not the first volunteers to be awarded volunteer awards this year – club coach and secretary Alison Finn won the over-18s Filton Unsung Heros award in July and a few months ago club chairman Andrew Phelps won the Chair of South Gloucesterhire Council’s award for services to volunteering. As a bonus, Andrew later got to meet Earl and Countess of Wessex at a lunch for the volunteers.

Volunteering is clearly a big part of the club, with it being run entirely by volunteers, from coaching to ‘back room’ staff.

Judo club celebrates success at area championships

Posted on Thursday 14th June 2012 at 3:27 pm by SH (Editor)

Patchway Judo Club 2012 Western Area champions and medal winners.

Patchway Judo Club proudly returned from the Western Area Championships, hosted in Devon last month, with five area champions, two silver medallists, five bronze medallists and three 5th places.

The 15 players, who all train at the club, were part of a 25-player squad representing the “county” of Bristol (the smallest of the seven “counties” in the South West area), who finished second to winners Devon.

For area champions Reece & Kieran Peacock, who are twins, and bronze medallist Chris Field, it was their last Junior Area Championships, as all three turn 16 in December.

For two of the club’s other area champions, 8-year-old Harvey Hirst and 11-year-old George Burton, it was their first Area Championships. And for the only female area champion, Chloe Gowen (whose main club is Yate Star), she successfully defended her title.

There were silver medals for Charlotte Williams & Rachel Bennett, with Connor Wiltshire, Finley Norton, Ozzy Gowen and Caleb Wootton winning bronze medals and Ryan Guest, Connor Madden and Harrison Grove coming 5th.

Patchway Judo Club is a family club, with players ranging from recreational to competitive county, area and national-level standard. The club achieved the Sport England bronze Club Mark award in 2008, the silver award in 2011 and is now working towards gold level.
