Three people had a lucky escape after a fire caused thick smoke to fill their home in Southsea Road, Patchway, in the early hours of Wednesday morning (2nd May).

Crews from Patchway Fire Station were called following reports of a fire on the first floor of the semi-detached property. Two fire engines were sent to the scene and, acting on concerns there were still people inside the house, firefighters began an immediate search of the property.

Four firefighters in breathing apparatus were involved in the search, but fortunately it was found that the three people in the house at the time of the fire had escaped before crews arrived. Firefighters used high pressure hose reels to bring the fire under control.

One woman in the house at the time of the fire had been able to leave from the ground floor, while a man and lady on the first floor escaped through a bedroom window. All were treated on the scene for the effects of smoke inhalation; the man and woman who escaped from the first floor were later taken to hospital as a precaution.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire & Rescue said the cause of the fire is being investigated. He added that the three people in the house had a lucky escape as it is believed there were no smoke detectors in the property at the time of the fire.

The fire service recommends that smoke alarms are fitted on every floor of the home and should be checked on a regualar basis to ensure they are working.
